| You dont decide to "trade back" after you have told the body guy to go ahead and spend time/money on making it work. At that point it is now YOUR hatch. Why should he trade you anything he has a use for, for something that he has no use for? You should have paid better attention to condition of the hatch when you picked it up, or let the guy know that you were going to wait til daytime to look it over the following day and determine if it is in as-promised condition if you absolutely couldn't avoid picking it up at night. That's the lesson you should have learned from this. What you did makes you sound like a flake to me, and I can certainly sympathize with your "friend" if he doesnt want to fool with you further over it.
